The Lutheran Church in Tanzania is an eclectic church in the sense that many mission organizations from many countries, including German, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and the USA, have been helping the church during the last 100 years. One can find a very wide range of teaching from one area to another. What we offer are the documents that define what Lutherans believed at the time of the Reformation and still hold to.
Today the Lutheran Church in Tanzania has over 4 million members, larger than the LCMS but many struggle to know what Lutherans believe and why. For this reason LHF-Africa has been translating the Good News magazines (Habari Njema in Kiswhahili) and foundational books such as Luther’s Small catechism, the Book of Concord, God’s No and God’s Yes, Masimulizi ya Biblia (Bible stories, Lutheran study book), Here I Stand (Bainton), and others.
The work does not stop with the translation. Most have never heard of these books. Therefore we offer workshops to study the Lutheran doctrine so that we can better understand why Lutherans believe what they do and where it comes from in the Holy Bible.
A conference on “How Lutherans Pray” took place in April with guest lecturer Rev. Justin Herman from Montana, USA.
