Somalia

There are many Somali refugees in Kenya.  Because the government in Somalia is not stable and because the quality of life is so poor, people flee looking for a better life.  Because of all the problems and a radically different culture, they are not readily accepted in Kenya.  They are not physically persecuted in Kenya but it is very difficult for them to find work.

Many Somali refugees have found hope and safety at our chapel.  This is not necessarily safe for them and many in my confirmation class have been beaten in Kenya simply for having Christian literature.  What surprised me is, they still came back.  They still want to learn more.  They want to hear what Jesus taught and they want to memorize the teachings in case they cannot come to church.  The first Sunday after Christmas seven Somalis were baptized.  We have about 15 in confirmation class.  Luther’s Small Catechism is translated into Somali but many of them cannot read.  Therefore those who can read, do, and they others repeat.  This makes teaching difficult and some of them feel embarrassed because they can’t read.  Please keep them in your prayers.
